Disc 4 out of 6

The other day I was sitting down to enjoy the 4th disc of Sports Night from Netflix, when I realized something.

Anyway, the blog is really dead, so I thought I'd post something.

What? Oh right, my ultra-mini epiphany. As I was about to throw the disc into my makeshift DVD player (ie, Xbox), I kind of didn't want to watch it, but I was really looking forward to seeing more episodes. Confused? Well, I realized that I was in the middle of my favorite part of a New Thing (TV show, song, girlfriend, whatever), disc 4 out of 6.

The beginning isn't the best part, at the beginning you don't know if you're really going to like the New Thing. The end obviously isn't the best part, because even though you've experienced all the goodness, there isn't anything more to look forward to. No, the best part is disc 4 out of 6, when you know that you like the New Thing, but you still have a lot of that thing left to look forward to.

To put it another way, my favorite time when I discover a new song, isn't the first, second, or even the third time I listen to it. At that point I don't even know if I'll like it or not. The next 6-10 times I listen to it, those are golden, cause I love the song but I'm not sick of it yet.

So that's why I didn't want to watch Sports Night even though I was really enjoying it. I was in the perfect zone of A New Thing, and didn't want to get to the end too soon.

Maybe that's why I seem to have statute of limitations on my girlfriends (and just to steal all your thunder, I'll say it myself, when I have a girlfriend), because I've left the perfect zone of a New Thing. The very beginning of a relationship isn't what I enjoy, it's fraught with unknowns and insecurities. And maybe somewhere around the 16-month-to-2-year mark I leave the perfect zone, when I know this is a good relationship but I still have a lot of new stuff to look forward to.

Or maybe I'm completely talking out of my ass and overthinking everything. Either way, the point is I did end up watch disc 4 of Sports Night, and it was damn good.
